{"id":504,"date":"2025-05-06T15:35:26","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T15:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/logicalware.net\/?p=504"},"modified":"2025-05-06T19:36:56","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T19:36:56","slug":"protesters-occupy-university-of-washington-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/logicalware.net\/index.php\/2025\/05\/06\/protesters-occupy-university-of-washington-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesters occupy University of Washington building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pro-Palestinian protesters occupied a building at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle on Monday, according to a student newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily, a UW student newspaper, reported Monday that the school\u2019s Interdisciplinary Engineering Building had been occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyuw.com\/news\/pro-palestinian-protesters-occupy-new-uw-engineering-building-demand-university-cut-boeing-ties\/article_8d4fe9d5-6ff4-41bd-b042-2da9ddf0c74d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over financial links between<\/a> Boeing and the university.<\/p>\n<p>The group Students United for Palestinian Equality &amp; Return <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/super_uw\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed in a post Monday<\/a> on Medium that it was \u201ctaking this building amidst the current and renewed wave of the student Intifada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Washington is a direct partner in the genocide of the Palestinian people through its allegiance to its partnership with Boeing. Boeing manufactures the F-15 fighter jets, Apache helicopters, Hellfire missiles, and 500 pound bombs which [I]srael uses to murder entire Palestinian families and destroy Palestinian homes, schools, hospitals, and mosques,\u201d the group&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@super.uw.seattle\/we-demand-uw-will-no-longer-be-complicit-in-genocide-0099dc761f92\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Medium post read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing has a historically strong presence in the Seattle area, with two major factories north and south of downtown in Everett and Renton employing many in the communities around Puget Sound.<\/p>\n<p>UW spokesperson Victor Balta said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2025\/05\/06\/statement-on-occupation-of-interdisciplinary-engineering-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a statement<\/a> that later Monday \u201ca number of individuals temporarily occupied the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building and created a dangerous environment in and around the building.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The school also said that close to 30 people were arrested and that it will refer \u201ccharges of trespassing, property destruction and disorderly conduct, and conspiracy to commit all three&#8221; to the local prosecutor&#8217;s office. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice worked with law enforcement partners to contain the situation and began clearing the area outside the building around 10:30 p.m. before moving into the building to clear it at 11 p.m.,\u201d UW said in its statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Hill has reached out to UW and Boeing for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pro-Palestinian protesters occupied a building at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle on Monday, according to a student newspaper.
